The Economic Causes of Emigration from Croatia in the Period from the 1880's to the First World War

D u r i n g t h e m i d d l e of t h e p e r i o d o b s e r v e d , t ha t is in 1890, i t h a d a p o p u l a t i o n of ove r 3 mi l l ion r e s i d e n t s ( C r o a t i a a n d Slavonia 2,201,927; D a l m a t i a 527,426 a n d Is t r ia 317 ,610) . ' I t h a s b e e n e s t i m a t e d t h a t t o w a r d s t h e e n d of this p e r i o d , t h a t i s in 1914, ( e m i g r a t i o n a l m o s t c o m p l e t e l y s t o p p e d d u r i n g the 4 w a r y e a r s ) e m i g r a t i o n f rom C r o a t i a r e a c h e d ove r o n e half mi l l ion individuals . I t s h o u l d be e m p h a s i s e d t h a t this w a s a p e r i o d of in tens ive e m i g r a t i o n f rom o t h e r E u r o p e a n c o u n t r i e s to t he » N e w W o r l d « , so t h a t t h e e m i g r a t i o n f rom o u r r eg ions was a c o m p o n e n t o f t h e E u r o p e a n t r a n s c o n t i n e n t a l m ig ra t i ons .
